Restoring
an SQL .bak file into a new blank database
The following process can be used to move an existing database
to a different drive or to check your backup integrity without restoring
over your working database:
- Open the SQL enterprise manager.
- Expand the tree until you see your server.
- Highlight your server.
- Click on the wand in the upper toolbar.
- Double-click on ‘Database’
- Click 'Create Database Wizard'
- Click 'OK'
- Click 'Next'
- Enter the name you want to use for the new database.
- Enter the desired location for the new database and transaction
log.
- Click 'Next'
- Click 'Next' again.
- Click 'Next' on the following screen with the default settings.
- Click 'Next' again.
- Click 'Next' on the following screen with the default settings.
- Click 'Finish'.
- You should see a "Database created successfully" message.
Click 'OK'.
- When prompted to create a maintenance plan, select "No".
A new empty database has been created. Now we'll restore the .bak
file into this database.
- On the left side of the screen, expand the database folder
and select the new database you just created.
- Right-click on the new database.
- Select 'All tasks', 'Restore database'.
- In the Restore option select 'From Device.'
- Click 'Select Devices.'
- Click the 'Add' button.
- Click the three-dotted button to the right of the file name.
- Browse to the .bak file you wish to restore.
- Click 'OK.'
- Click 'OK' again. You should be at the 'General' tab.
- Click on the 'Options' tab.
- Check the 'Force Restore Over Existing Database' checkbox.
- Under the 'Move to physical file name' you will see a path.
- Double click on that path so that it is highlighted and editable.
- Change the path to the desired location, but leave the .MDF
extension on the end of the new database name.
- Do the same on the second line with the .LDF file.
- Click 'OK' to begin the process.
