Job Description

 

Our client is an entrepreneurial Canadian company, privately owned and profitable.  They are in the process of renovating their Supply Chain function. The ideal candidate will have a minimum 8 years experience in leading the distribution function of a busy, growing manufacturing operation and be familiar with the integration of a complex supply chain that includes production facilities in E Ontario and China.  A cross-functional approach to ongoing business challenges will be required and includes the following activities.

Managing the movement of raw and purchase finished materials locally and in China.

Planning/scheduling the internal processing of materials into finished goods (3 plants).

Managing the movement of finished goods out of the organization and to the customer incl ownership of lead times, customs agents, container tracking, etc.

Improving management control of daily logistics operations and inventory visibility and velocity.

Usual Strategic Responsibility and Inputs

  • Strategic network optimization, including the number, location, and size of warehousing, DC’s, and facilities.
  • Creating communication channels for critical information to and from suppliers, distributors and customers, and operational improvements such as cross docking, direct shipping, and third party logistics.
  • Product life cycle management, so that new and existing products can be optimally integrated into the supply chain and capacity management activities.
  • Information technology chain operations including input to new system implementation.
  • Where-to-make and what-to-make-or-buy decisions.
  • Aligning overall organizational strategy with supply strategy. 

Usual Tactical Responsibility and Inputs

  • Sourcing contracts and other purchasing decisions.
  • Production decisions, including contracting, scheduling, and planning process definition.
  • Inventory decisions, including quantity, location, and quality of inventory.
  • Transportation strategy, including frequency, routes, and contracting.
  • Benchmarking of all operations against competitors and implementation of best practices throughout the supply chain.
  • Milestone payments.
  • Focus on customer demand.

 

Usual Operational Responsibility and Inputs

  • Daily production and distribution planning, including all nodes in the supply chain.
  • Production scheduling for each manufacturing facility (only Cornwall today but would manage production info from China) . With IQMS the idea would be output measured hourly.
  • Demand planning and forecasting, coordinating the demand forecast of all customers and communicating the forecast with all suppliers to minimize on hand inventory thru JIT
  • Sourcing planning, including current inventory and forecast demand, with EDI collaboration with all suppliers.
  • Inbound operations, including transportation from suppliers and receiving inventory.
  • Production operations, including materials usage and yield, and flow of finished goods.
  • Outbound operations, including all order filling, warehousing and transportation to customers.
  • Order promising, accounting for all constraints in the supply chain, including all suppliers, manufacturing facilities, distribution centers, and other customers.

Candidates should be familiar with and able to implement SCOR, (Supply Chain Operations Reference) and support/develop each of the three pillars:

Process Modeling

Plan – Improved version of what we currently use to balance demand and supply to best meet sourcing, production, and delivery requirements.

Source – This is not just China but current suppliers of raw, steel and PF materials

Make – This is our production plan and includes, boxing from bulk.

Deliver - Typically includes order management, warehouse management, transportation management, and distribution management.

Return – Controlling the return or receiving of returned products for any reason.

Additional responsibility--

  • Customer interactions, from order entry through paid invoice.
  • All product (physical material and service) transactions, from your supplier’s supplier to our customer’s customer, including equipment, supplies, spare parts, bulk product, software, etc.
  • All market interactions, from the understanding of aggregate demand to the fulfillment of each order.

 

Performance Measures

We currently measure on time delivery and order fill, we have started to measure inventory accuracy in finished goods and will eventually measure inventory accuracy in raw, steel and PF materials, the goal is to be able to manage inventory in a virtual mode thru IQMS. Anticipated constraints to order fill rates have demonstrated we must implement forward looking measures for China supply which are online and available for all functions. What we don’t have in place but probably should are the following;

  • Supplier delivery performance and order fill
  • Capacity plan for finished good’s fill rate (absolute demand potential)
  • 3 way capacity plan for production ( best case, worse case and current)
  • Financial measures for material Costs of Goods
  • Returns, rebox and re-inventory costs

 

Best Practice

You would expect some best practice ideas to be brought with the candidate, but I suggest that we should measure ourselves against the following best in class

  • Total order fill cycle time (from customer order to goods receipt by customer)
  • Identified Gap analysis
  • Upside and downside supply chain costs.
