Selected Fellows/Researchers will have the opportunity to perform research on topics of interest to the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine and to interact with and learn from leading scientists performing research. The extensive partnering relationships with universities and other government agencies will expose participants to a broad research community. Additionally, program participants will have the opportunity to meet government decision-makers and learn directly from them about the role of scientific research in addressing complex, real-world (i.e., operational) needs. Furthermore, fellows have the opportunity to learn how research products transition from the proof-of-concept stage to integrated production systems.

Applicants should have recently completed a degree within five years of the targeted start date in a STEM related discipline, or will be able to complete of all requirements for the degree within six months of the starting date. The participants will be selected based on academic records, recommendations, research interests and compatibility of background with research programs and projects at the host facility. The initial appointment is typically for one year and may be renewed for up to four additional years based upon recommendation of the host installation and subject to availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend which is determined based upon level of education, training, and experience. Inbound travel and moving expenses are reimbursed according to established policies. Travel and other costs will also be reimbursed for training related to the project and approved by ORISE and the host facility. The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. Health plans are available through the ORISE for Postgraduate Internship participants.

Job Description

One postdoc research opportunity is availabile with the United States Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine Department of Aeromedical Research.  This opportunity will be located in Baltimore, MD.  USAFSAM is seeking a Postdoctoral canddiates with a background in electrical engineering or computer science with experience in analyzing big data, waveforms, advanced machine learning techniques and predictive algorithms.The appointment is scheduled to last at least twelve months, possibly up to total of five years pending available funding. The funding is approved in twelve month intervals. The annual equivalent stipend for the appointment period is $96K.

A major focus of the USAF research at CSTARS Baltimore has focused on the development and testing of real-time advanced machine learning-based computer algorithms that process continuous streams of trauma patient physiological data (waveforms and data points) and predict the need for life saving interventions (such as blood transfusion) and the clinical course of the patient. The intern will participate in applying advanced machine learning to process continuous physiological data to create decision support algorithms.
