Company Summary HUMAN RESEARCH AND ENGINEERING DIRECTORATE

The Human Research and Engineering Directorate (HRED) is ARL’s principal center for research and development directed toward optimizing soldier performance and man-machine interactions. The HRED examines human performance in the perceptual, cognitive, and psychomotor domains in order to increase the body of knowledge of human capabilities and limitations, and to assess the impact of emerging technologies on soldier performance. Research is conducted on intelligent decision aids and interfaces; human control of automated systems; control display and workstation design; and MANPRINT design, analysis, and integration methods. In addition, the HRED develops unique and innovative methods, tools, models, and simulations for measuring and characterizing soldier performance. The Directorate is recognized by the National Science Foundation (NSF) as a Center of Excellence in Human Engineering, Ergonomics, and Experimental Psychology. It conducts a collaborative research program with NSF-supported university faculty and their graduate students. In addition, the HRED participates in the extensive Department of Defense University Initiative Program. The majority of the Directorate’s research facilities are located at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. Additionally, field elements are maintained at 20 locations in the continental US. The following “Opportunities for Research” are all at the Aberdeen Proving Ground location. All opportunities posted are ongoing.


ABOUT ARL

The Army Research Laboratory Postdoctoral Fellowship Program is designed to significantly increase the involvement of creative and highly trained scientists and engineers from academia and industry in scientific and technical areas of interest and relevance to the Army. Scientists and Engineers at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) help shape and execute the Army's program for meeting the challenge of developing technologies that will support Army forces in meeting future operational needs by pursuing scientific research and technological developments in diverse fields such as: applied mathematics, atmospheric characterization, simulation and human modeling, digital/optical signal processing, nanotechnology, material science and technology, multifunctional technology, combustion processes, propulsion and flight physics, communication and networking, and computational and information sciences. The Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) provides opportunities to participate in ARL’s on-going and applied research and development projects through its programs in: Computational & Information Science, Human Research and Engineering, Survivability & Lethality Analysis, Sensors & Electron Devices, Weapons & Materials Research, and Vehicle Technology.


BENEFITS OF PARTICIPATING IN THE ARL POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Selected Fellows/Researchers will have the opportunity to perform research on topics of interest to the U.S. Government and to interact with leading scientists performing research and/or advising at the sponsor. The extensive partnering relationships with universities and other government agencies will expose participants to a broad research community. Fellows will have the opportunity to meet government decision-makers and learn directly from them about the role of scientific research in addressing complex, real-world (i.e., operational) needs. Furthermore, fellows have the opportunity to learn how research products transition from the proof-of-concept stage to integrated production systems. Other benefits may include the following:


Stipend

Stipend payments for regular associates (recent Ph.D.) and senior awards (e.g. faculty or sabbatical) are based upon the discipline and area of research.


Insurance

During the period of the Fellowship, ORAU will provide group health insurance that includes medical and prescription drug coverage to eligible participants upon appointment in the program. There is no waiting period for coverage to begin. Each plan is a preferred provider plan (PPO) with providers in all states. In addition, ORAU will provide coverage for Accidental Medical and Accidental Death and Dismemberment.


Travel and Relocation

Fellows may be eligible for travel and relocation expenses. This includes movement of household goods from your current address to the research site, and limited professional travel, provided such travel is recommended and approved by both ARL and ORAU.


ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS


Postodoctoral Fellows:

The proposed applicant is responsible for ensuring all sections of the application are prepared in ORAU format, has been coordinated with an advisor, and appropriate ARL branch and division chiefs. Before appointment, each applicant must present evidence of having received a Ph.D., Sc.D., or other earned research doctoral degree recognized in U.S. academic circles as equivalent to a Ph.D. Applicants must submit a research proposal that relates to a specific research opportunity at ARL. A proposal must be original work of the applicant and sponsored by an Advisor at an ARL laboratory. Before writing a proposal, an applicant is strongly advised to communicate directly with the Advisor, who can provide more specific information on the current research and available technical facilities and offer scientific support of proposal development. The advisor will not write your proposal. Each applicant's proposal must be approved by an ARL Advisor and endorsed by the appropriate ARL directorate ORAU POC. Senior Researchers:

Senior Researchers must have held the doctorate degree for five years or more at the time of application or hold a permanent appointment in academia, Government or industry and have research experience that has resulted in significant contributions and recognition as established investigators in their specialized fields. APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

Applications for Postdoctoral Fellows and Senior Researchers are accepted and reviewed on a continuous basis for selection throughout the year. Summer Faculty applications can be submitted throughout the year, however applicants are encouraged to submit applications by April for consideration for the current year. Fellows will be selected based on the research proposal, academic records, recommendations, applied research interests and compatibility of background with applied research programs and projects at the host Installation. The initial appointment is typically for one year and may be renewed for up to three additional years based upon recommendation of the host installation and subject to availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend which is determined based upon level of education, training, and experience. Inbound travel and moving expenses are reimbursed according to established policies. Travel and other costs will also be reimbursed for training related to the project and approved by ORAU and the host installation. The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. Health plans are available through the ORAU for Postgraduate Internship participants.

Job Description

The U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) has research opportunities available in multisensory integration and perception. ARL seeks outstanding Associates to join a team that is advancing empirical understandings and theoretical conceptualizations of human multisensory processing. Experimental approaches focus on developing and utilizing novel technology platforms to examine new multi-sensor combinations and critical issues of multisensory integration in real-world environments. We aim to discover techniques to enable robust, versatile, closed-loop systems that improve performance throughout the sensory-perceptual-motor decision-making cycle by leveraging knowledge of human nervous system capabilities for integrating, interpreting, and utilizing information from the brain, body, behavior, and environment. Modeling efforts focus on cybernetic, systems control theory, or dynamical systems approaches to conceptualizing multisensory integration at the systems level (or higher), with an emphasis on nonlinear, adaptive, and/or dynamical models. Other relevant modeling approaches will also be considered.

The Associate will pursue well-defined objectives within the broad scope of this program, but should have the ability to work within a multidisciplinary team that includes collaborators from wide-ranging domains, such as cognitive neuroscience, electrical engineering, computer science, and applied physics or mathematics, among others. The Associate should have a strong affinity for quantitative analysis, with experience in biosignal data collection and/or analysis recommended. Researchers having familiarity with multi-aspect data approaches are encouraged to apply, with programming skill and experience with measurement and user interface hardware and software integration desired. Computational scientists with experience in the modeling of closed-loop systems are similarly encouraged to apply, with demonstrated skill in model development, implementation, analysis, simulation, and testing, a significant plus. The Associate will collaborate with team members to design and conduct human subjects experiments, including tests of specific model predictions, integrating ideas and techniques across the foundational knowledge base of human multisensory integration.
