A small, high-growth Genomics company operating in the oncology space is expanding their commercial team and adding a Senior Director of Strategic Marketing in the Life Science Research and Clinical Diagnostics segments. They’ve developed unique, RNA-based Next Gen Sequencing technology that allows for extraction-free molecular profiling with significantly less sample material than is required by existing assays. Now publicly traded and well-capitalized, they have enjoyed double-digit revenue growth each of the past three years and now need a strategic marketing professional to help take them to the next level. The Opportunity
Our client has retained us to find a Senior Director of Strategic Marketing to lead the portfolio planning and product road-mapping function for their franchise of RNA assays. You will serve as the “Assay Architect,” developing user requirements and target product profiles for new tests that will satisfy unmet needs in the academic and biopharmaceutical research markets, as well as in clinical diagnostics. This is upstream, global marketing that will include extensive analytics, financial modeling, market research, product positioning and alliance management with partners in oncology research and in the CLIA lab industry. You will monitor trends in cancer research, build relationships with Key Opinion Leaders in the oncology community, and work closely with colleagues in R&D to provide commercial direction for product development initiatives.

The Senior Director will develop business cases to analyze and support product development decisions, and present and defend recommendations with senior leadership. We are seeking a strategic professional with strong leadership skills, as well as someone who is committed to “ideation” in the genomics market. As products move through development you will build and lead a team of marketing professionals responsible for upstream product planning as well as downstream marketing activities. One direct report is currently assigned to this position. Other duties will include gap assessment, competitive intelligence, product launch planning, positioning, and close work with downstream Regional counterparts to ensure product launch success.

This is a high-profile assignment in the dynamic field of Next Gen Sequencing, so the challenges will be varied and the job broadly defined. In addition to understanding the needs of the oncology research community, you will work with clinical development teams in Biopharma organizations to support their Biomarker strategies and their development of new companion diagnostic tests across a broad range of cancers and tumor types. In the clinical diagnostics channel a key element to success will be the ability to develop a roadmap of cancer tests that have reimbursable content, with a focus on satisfying NCCN guidelines. So we need someone not only familiar with the oncology market, but also experienced in the operations of CLIA certified laboratories that run genomics and proteomics based assays. The role is global in scope but the initial focus is on product development and commercialization in North America. Overnight travel is estimated at 25%.

• Bachelor’s degree or better in the Life Sciences with business and marketing training; MBA, MS or PhD preferred. A high technical acumen is required.
• 10+ years of marketing experience in the Genomics business (research or clinical markets)
• 5+ years of upstream marketing and new product planning experience
• 2+ years at the Director or Senior Director level, including supervisory experience of other marketing personnel
• Preference will be given to candidates with experience in either the Next Gen Sequencing space or with assays used in cancer research
